History of St. Patrick’s Day March 17th is the Roman Catholic feast day celebrating Ireland’s patron saint. Saint Patrick was born in Britain in the 4th century. He was kidnapped at age 16 and taken to Ireland where he spent six years as a slave. During this time he became a devout Christian. After he escaped from captivity he spent the rest of his life converting the Irish to Christianity. Many myths emerged around Saint Patrick’s life including the claim that he drove all the snakes out of Ireland. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade was not in Ireland but in Colonial New York City in 1762 by Irish soldiers in the English military. Today the parade consists of over 150,000 participants making it the largest and longest running parade in the United States.
