No matter what badge they wear Peace Officers are vital parts of our community. In 1962 President Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day. The same year by joint resolution, Congress established National Police Week to be held each year during the week that May 15th falls. In 1994 President Bill Clinton amended the proclamation to require the lowering of the American Flag to half staff in honor of those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
Albuquerque honors the fallen each year as well with ceremonies and vigils. Most of the focus for the day is on Washington D.C. at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Wall where the names of fallen officers are read. There are over 20,000 names of fallen officers starting with the first known in 1791.
